September, 2012 - 5 NA Emergency Public Safety (EPS) Paramedics visited Mafraq hospital this month to meet with head cardiologist, Dr Michael Khouri. The invite, from the Dr, came following discussions on ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) care and work completed by our staff.

The meeting has allowed the staff to debate the future of pre hospital cardiac care, as well as allowing them an insight into the problems coronary heart disease (CHD) is placing on the region. It is hopeful, in the not too distant future, that all Emergency Public Safety paramedics will have the ability to directly admit an Acute Coronary Syndrome (ACS) patient to his unit bypassing the emergency room.

Talks are continuing on the benefits of, and place for, Pre hospital Thrombolysis (PHT); with Cath Labs in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain, PHT as a reperfusion strategy may be reserved for more remote working or following direct consultation with a cardiologist.

Work will continue on this goal and it is hoped that another group of EPS paramedics can visit with the Doctor next month to gain a similar insight and help plan the future of pre hospital cardiac care in the UAE.
